Installation instructions

Download and verify on your computer, then copy over USB SSH. On Linux, use sha256sum -c instead of shasum -a 256 -c if needed. Replace the USB address with your tablet’s SSH address when using Wi-Fi. Run Egill inside an installed terminal such as Inkline, with a keyboard, or over SSH. This installs a terminal application, not a replacement for the tablet UI. Check your firmware’s glibc version before installing; older firmware may be incompatible.

Installers use ~/.local/bin/egill and keep each release in ~/.local/share/egill. They preserve older versions and refuse to replace an unrelated executable. Add ~/.local/bin to your shell’s PATH. Set EGILL_PREFIX to install elsewhere. No administrator privileges are needed on macOS or desktop Linux.

The first page

Open a terminal.
Start writing.

Use a UTF-8 terminal. Egill automatically selects the available graphics protocol; Kitty is optional. Basic writing and equation previews need no Python or TeX installation.

Bring it to your own terminal.

The source archive includes locked, vendored Rust dependencies and the build instructions. Project code is Apache-2.0; bundled fonts and dependencies retain their own licenses. No proprietary WordPerfect executables, fonts or drivers are included.
